[How to understand the most in your first wingfoil class]

You heard a lot about wingfoil and decided to get started? Congratulations! This page will help you to get familiar with the slang of this new and exciting world.

This wingfoil glossary helps you as a beginner to understand common terminologies of this sport. Below you find a small selection of basic expressions. Trust me, there are way more ;-)

Board

A board designed for wingfoiling, typically equipped with a hydrofoil.

Foil

A hydrofoil that lifts the board out of the water, reducing drag and increasing speed.

Wing

A handheld sail that is used to harness the power of the wind and propel the board across the water.

Pump

A technique used to generate speed by pumping the wing up and down.

Tack

A maneuver used to change direction by turning the board through the wind.

Jibe

A maneuver used to change direction by turning the board downwind.

Luffing

A technique used to depower the wing by turning it into the wind.

Downwind

The direction in which the wind is blowing.

Upwind

The direction opposite to the wind.

Leash

flexible cord that connects the rider with the wing/ the board

On-shore wind

Wind that blows onto the beach with 90º angle. More information can be found in the wind direction guide.

Off-shore wind

Wind that blows onto the sea with a 90º angle, away from the beach. More information can be found in the wind direction guide.

Rider

Side-shore wind

also cross-shore: wind that blows parallel with beach and sea. More information can be found in the wind direction guide.
